P.D. Powell & Sons was started by Paul Powell in 1972. More than 40 years on, it is still run by the family from the showroom in Griffithstown.

1972
Where it began
Paul Powell starts the company as a heating contractor with a small team of two or three, working on new builds, heating and plumbing installations and renovations. Paul’s wife Angela runs the office, doing the books and general administration.

1984
Maintenance and servicing
The company branches out into heating maintenance and servicing, and keeps growing.

1993
The showroom opens
The Bathroom & Fireplace Showroom opens in Griffithstown, Pontypool. It has since expanded and now occupies 1-5 Cambria Street.

1997
Nathan joins
The first of Paul’s three sons, Nathan, joins as an apprentice. He is now the Lead Bathroom Installer.

2002
Scott joins
Scott, Paul’s youngest son, joins as an apprentice and works mainly on heating installations.

Ryan joins
After the end of a successful rugby career, Ryan joins the company to manage the showroom and office.

Paul Powell
Founder. Started the company in 1972 as a heating contractor.
Nathan
Lead Bathroom Installer. Joined as an apprentice in 1997.
Scott
Heating installations. Joined as an apprentice in 2002.
Ryan
Manages the showroom and office. Joined in 2012.
Angela, Paul’s wife, has looked after the books and general administration from the start.
Ryan Powell
From scrum-half to showroom.
Ryan is a Wales international rugby union player. His position was scrum-half.

Wales caps. Debut from the bench against South Africa on 8 June 2002, during Wales’s summer tour to South Africa.

Appearances for Cardiff Blues over seven seasons, including more than 20 Heineken Cup matches.
Born in Panteg in 1980, Ryan joined Worcester Warriors from Cardiff Blues in March 2006, signed a new deal at Sixways in 2008 and moved to Northampton in the Aviva Premiership in 2010. A neck injury forced his retirement in August 2011, and in 2012 he joined the family business.
